ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Los Alamos Technical Associates, Inc. (LATA), a leading provider of technical and environmental services, is pleased to announce that it has been selected by Kairos Power, LLC to provide environmental, professional, and technical consulting services to support the construction of the Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The Hermes reactor is a landmark project, being the first and only Generation IV reactor to be approved for construction by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the first non-light-water reactor permitted in the United States in over 50 years. Construction of the Hermes reactor commenced in July 2024.
LATA’s role in the Hermes project will be to perform ancillary reclamation activities required at the brownfield site to enable a successful excavation. LATA will ensure all work is performed in compliance with regulatory standards while promoting sustainable practices aligned with Kairos Power’s mission to protect the environment.
Hermes represents a crucial step toward commercializing Kairos Power’s fluoride salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (KP-FHR) technology, a clean energy solution that offers robust inherent safety and affordability to enable deep decarbonization. The
Hermes reactor will build upon lessons from Kairos Power’s iterative testing program, demonstrating their ability to produce affordable nuclear heat and advancing their innovative approach to nuclear energy development.
