Kevin W. Smith joins the LATA team


Kevin has previously held a number of senior leadership positions with both the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Defense (DOD). He has extensive experience leading and managing large, complex nuclear and high hazard organizations. Currently, Kevin provides procurement consultant services to a range of companies interested in doing business with DOE.


With DOE, Kevin served in the Senior Executive Service (SES) in a number of leadership positions to include the Manager of the Office of River Protection (ORP), Manager of the Los Alamos Site Office (LASO), acting Manager of the Kansas City Plant Site Office (KCSO), Deputy Manager of Y-12 Site Office (YSO), and Assistant Manager of the Savannah River Nuclear Materials Stabilization Project (AMNMSP) which had the additional responsibility for the oversight of the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). Kevin’s DOE responsibilities included amongst others being a Safety Basis Approval Authority, Senior Technical Safety Manager, Hazard Category 3 Start-up Authority, contract Fee Determining Official, and Acquisition Executive for projects up to $100M.

Prior to joining DOE, Kevin served in the U.S. Air Force in a number of capacities including Air Combat Command’s Director of Safety, where he was responsible for the flying, weapons, nuclear, and industrial safety programs for ~100,000 personnel; Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (DJ3) for U.S. Forces Korea; Commander of the 49th Operations Group at Holloman Air Force Base, Alamogordo New Mexico; and Commander of the 308th Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Phoenix Arizona. Kevin was an instructor pilot in the F-4, F-16, and the F-117 Stealth Fighter. He is a graduate of the U.S. Fighter Weapons School, Air Command & Staff College, and Air War College. He was an Adjunct Faculty Instructor for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the University of Maryland. He taught a wide range of subjects to include mathematics, physics, earth science, astronomy, management, aircraft accident investigation, and safety program management.


Kevin is from Olympia, Washington, a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a Master of Science degree in management, from Troy State University. He and his wife, Dorothy, live in Richland, Washington.
